September is PAD Awareness Month

What is PAD? Peripheral Artery Disease (PAD) is a condition where the arteries that supply blood to your limbs, typically the legs, become narrowed or blocked. This narrowing is often caused by a buildup of fatty deposits, or, plaque, in the artery walls, which can restrict blood flow and lead to various symptoms.

Signs and Symptoms of PAD

  • Leg pain or cramping (especially during physical activity)
  • Numbness or tingling in the legs or feet
  • Sores or wounds that heal slowly
  • Coldness in the legs or feet

Risk Factors for PAD

  • Smoking
  • High blood pressure
  • High cholesterol
  • Diabetes
  • Age (over 50)
  • Family history of PAD or other cardiovascular diseases

Importance of Early Detection

Early detection of PAD is crucial to prevent serious complications, such as tissue damage or amputation. If you are experiencing any of the symptoms listed above, it is important to see a healthcare provider for evaluation.

How ABI Systems Help

An Ankle-Brachial Index (ABI) is a simple non-invasive test that can help diagnose PAD. By comparing the blood pressure in your ankles to the blood pressure in your arms, an ABI can indicate whether there is reduced blood flow to your legs. ABI systems are essential tools for healthcare providers in diagnosing and managing PAD.

September: A Month of Awareness

September is designated as PAD Awareness Month to raise awareness about this common but often overlooked condition. By understanding the signs, symptoms, and risk factors of PAD, individuals can take steps to prevent and manage this disease.

What You Can Do

  • Know your risk factors. If you have risk factors for PAD, talk to your doctor about screening.
  • Maintain a healthy lifestyle. This includes a balanced diet, regular exercise, and avoiding smoking.
  • Manage underlying conditions. If you have diabetes or high blood pressure, work with your doctor to keep these conditions under control.
  • Seek medical attention if you experience symptoms. Early detection and treatment can help prevent complications.
